Riley’s Journey: A Sister Is the Best Kind of Friend
Riley was brought to Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA when her previous owners could no longer care for her. In many ways this sweet one-year-old pup is like any other boxer her age: She is full of exuberance, loves meeting new people, enjoys playing fetch, and is interested in playing with other dogs. There is just one quality that sets her apart from most other dogs—she’s deaf. Riley’s new family needed to be familiar with or willing to learn how to live with, train, and care for a deaf dog.
She was often overlooked by potential adopters due to the extra care and training she would need. Dogs with special needs usually take longer to find their forever families. Thanks to our Hope Program, Riley received care and affection from staff and volunteers until her perfect match was made. After 81 days of waiting, more than twice the average, Riley was jumping for joy to be going home. Her new family even included another boxer!
Rose and Riley have become the best of friends. They play at the park, go on hikes, and cuddle together. Riley thinks there’s nothing better than being warm and cozy, so much so that she has pajamas in multiple designs! Her family says, “She is so sweet and cuddly, and just like all the boxers we’ve had she is a big goofball who loves to make us laugh.” Riley wears a collar that says “I’m deaf” for awareness of her disability and her family is continuing her training. Riley is smart and very food motivated, so she has been learning many new hand signals. Her family says, “We are working with our vet to help and support her as much as we can to make sure she can enjoy her life to the fullest. We all just adore her and can’t imagine life without her now.”
Support from animal lovers like you allows PHS/SPCA to find homes for pets with special needs, like Riley.
