When Patience Pays Off

Lucy Chooses Her Family After 8 Months

Lucy with her new family

On their first meeting, Lucy settled into the lap of her new family.

Senior cat Lucy thought she had a forever home. But then her world was turned upside down when she was surrendered last year to Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA through no fault of her own. She found herself in an unfamiliar place, with unfamiliar people and was struggling to adjust to her new reality.

Lucy was very affectionate, but she was also very shy and wouldn’t come out to greet adopters who were interested in meeting with her. Being 10 years old, extremely reticent and needing to be the only pet in a household, it was extra challenging to find the ideal home for Lucy.

Our staff and volunteers worked with her day after day coaxing her out of her shell. Unbeknownst to us, Lucy was patiently waiting for the right adopters. After eight months in our shelter, and being passed up by dozens of potential adopters, Lucy picked her people.

A couple from San Bruno, California, came into our shelter looking to adopt a cat. As they passed by Lucy, this exceptionally shy cat unexpectedly came out from her hiding place, made eye contact with the couple, meowed and stretched out her paw toward them.

Gifts from friends like you ensure we can continue to provide care and love to animals like Lucy while they search for their forever homes.

The couple knew right then and there that Lucy had picked them. When they first met her, Lucy curled up in their laps making it known to all she had chosen her new family. Lucy is now enjoying her golden years being pampered and showering her family with lots of devoted love.

At Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, we don’t turn our backs on “less desirable” animals like Lucy. Despite her age and shyness, we were committed to providing the loving care Lucy needed until she was adopted, no matter how long that took. We accept all animals regardless of age, breed or even species.

Eight months was a long time for Lucy to wait to be adopted, but Lucy was determined to choose her own people, so for her it was worth the wait. And seeing how happy Lucy is, we agree with her.
