Shy Orange Julius

Julius, the cat

Julius needed time to come out of his shell, and a family with patience.

Orange tabby Julius didn't have the best start in life.

This scrappy fellow was barely surviving on the streets of Daly City when some good Samaritans decided to help him. They set up a humane trap and enticed him with food, so they could rescue him from his semi-feral existence. After a week, Julius' hunger finally led him to the food in the trap, and he was plucked off the streets and brought to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.

When Julius arrived at the shelter he was not only hungry for food, but also for affection. Even though he was wary and terrified, he still would knead and purr when PHS/SPCA staff and volunteers came to visit with him.

However he was still deeply reticent and would need to go home with adopters who would give Julius the space and time he needed until he felt safe again.

Because of his shyness Julius was overlooked by adopters for many months, until one day when his luck changed. He was adopted by a family who was willing to make every concession this sweet but fearful cat needed to thrive.

For the first few weeks at his new home Julius mostly hid underneath the bed, only coming out for food and water. Then slowly he began to explore his new home. His family continued to give Julius the wide berth he needed, until one day he jumped up on the bed and started to demand attention from his new family—he didn't retreat underneath the bed after that.

What Julius needed more than anything was to feel safe and know that he belonged. PHS/SPCA didn't turn its back on this shy cat and made sure to find a home that would allow Julius the time he needed to blossom.
