Geneva and Meraxes reunited

Geneva and Meraxes were united thanks to the help of local media.

Imagine her surprise when exotic pet owner Geneva saw her long-missing panther chameleon, Meraxes, on the news after having been rescued by Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA. The chameleon had been stranded on a power wire in Daly City for three days when a concerned resident called us for help.

Our staff was able to safely rescue the lizard with a net on a long poll and bring him to our shelter for a medical evaluation and some much-needed food and water. Since these lizards are not native to the area, we knew he was someone's pet and with the assistance of local media, shared the chameleon's rescue story and photos in hopes of finding his owner.

Daly City resident Geneva took one look at the photo of the lizard in the newspaper and knew it was her missing chameleon.

Meraxes on a power wire

Meraxes had been stranded on a power wire when a concerned resident called for help.

Back in June 2020, one of her chameleons, named Meraxes, had escaped from his enclosure. Geneva and her husband searched for months, but when he couldn't be found, they assumed the worst.

Meraxes being rescued

Meraxes was rescued with the help of a long pole and a net.

Chameleons are very delicate animals and need to have a warm and humid environment to survive. It was unlikely Meraxes would have survived for long outside of his enclosure, but he proved everyone wrong and endured a four-month-long absence from his family out in the wild. He didn't go very far either since he was rescued only a few houses down from his home in Daly City.

Geneva was so grateful to be reunited with her pet she assumed she'd never see again. And Meraxes is happy to be back home safe and sound.

Meraxes is just one of the hundreds of animals we reunite with their families every single year. To learn how you can help us continue reuniting families with a future gift, please contact Lisa Van Buskirk at Lvanbuskirk@phs-spca.org or 650-340-7022, Ext. 327.
