Burrowing Owl Program Update

Orphaned baby owls

Orphaned baby owls are given the head start they need to grow into healthy and strong adults at the Burrowing Owl Nursery.

You may recall in 2019 Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA opened our first Burrowing Owl Nursery. These little guys are struggling in their environment, and many do not survive. In our Burrowing Owl Nursery, orphaned baby owls are given the head start they need to grow into healthy and strong adults. Once mature, the owls are released to the wild where they can breed and help increase the number of local Burrowing Owl populations.

Burrowing owlWith our specialized care, we have raised two batches of Burrowing Owls into healthy adults. Upon their release, the owls adapted well to their habitat, showed no habituation to humans and many reproduced. Based on the success of these groups, researchers at the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency have continued their work with us. We currently have our third batch of owlets, some of whom were born to the owls we released during the last two years.
