Taking a Broken Heart and Making It Whole

Betty

Betty waited 301 days to find her forever family.

We will never know the story behind why 11-year-old Betty was found by our rescue staff alone, tired and hungry. She was wandering the boat docks of Redwood City seeking food and comfort from passing strangers.

When we found her, Betty eagerly allowed our staff to put a leash on her. We knew she had been owned. She wasn't suffering from any physical injuries, but it was clear that Betty's heart was broken. No one came forward to claim her, but we were not going to give up on this tender-hearted dog and worked to restore her spirits and faith in humans.

While Betty waited at our shelter to be adopted, she enthusiastically took to learning basic commands and tricks in our Second Chance dog classes for our shelter dogs. With her sweet nature and eagerness to please, Betty quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite.

But still no one adopted her.

Betty with her new family

Betty's new family has helped fix her broken heart, giving her a safe place to live out her golden years.

For 11 months, this senior dog watched other dogs go home, and wanted nothing more than to go home herself to a family that would never abandon her but would allow her to spend her golden years in a safe, supportive and loving environment.

A local radio station, ABC news, along with Peninsula TV pitched in to feature Betty on their shows to help spread the word about this sweet older gal looking for a new home.

Finally, after 301 days, a man arrived at our shelter specifically looking to adopt a senior dog. After meeting Betty, he knew she was the one for him. Betty now lives in Pacifica and not only has a new devoted family, she also has a new dog sibling and wants for nothing.

Many shelters would have turned Betty away because of her age. But Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA doesn't discriminate against senior animals and accepted Betty with open arms. We never lost faith that she would at last find her forever home, no matter how long it took.
